SOS VIDEOS

UNSW TV is presently producing a series of Science of the Surf videos for both YouTube and Foxtel’s Aurora Community TV channel as part of the UniTV program. All the episodes are directed by Andrew Traucki and filmed by cameraman Larry Gray. Episodes so far include:

Science of the Surf Episode 1: Wave Formation and Types

This video describes what waves are, how they form and the different types of waves that exist in the ocean. Filmed at Tamarama and Bronte in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, it also uses footage provided by Larry Gray.

Science of the Surf Episode 2: Wave Breaking

This video describes the interaction between waves and the seabed, what makes waves break, how they break, wave refraction and the different types of breaking waves. It’s also filmed primarily in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs beaches.

Don't Get Sucked in By the Rip

This video describes what rip currents are, how they form, what the different types are, how you can spot them, and what you can do if you get stuck in one! It was released on YouTube in December 2008 and has been massively successful and linked to websites around the world. Many thanks to the Waverley Council lifeguards (especially Yatesy and Chappo) for all their help and participation and also to the Discovery Channel Canada for letting us purchase footage of myself at great expense to myself. The rest of the footage was shot in one day by Shaun O’Dougherty. This video received national community safety awards in 2009.

MULTI-MEDIA

Triple J Radio Podcast on with Dr Karl and Dr Rip February 5, 2009

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki has been a strong supporter of Science of the Surf, particularly after he got caught in a rip himself! I was lucky enough to be invited by Karl into the Triple J studio to be part of his Science talkback show. For an hour we fielded questions related to all things coastal.

Deadly Surf; Why Ignorance of Rip Currents is the Greatest Hazard on Australian Beaches

On Dec 18, 2008 I was asked to contribute to an online media conference about summer hazards, This Power Point Presentation focused on rip currents.

ABC TV Behind the News: Drowning Danger

Goto: http://www.abc.net.au/news/btn/story/s2502347.htm
This is a show designed for Primary and High School Kids. Reporter Catherine Ellis, did a great job of combining my existing ABC footage to put together a great story on rips.

  The BEAST Magazine: www.thebeast.com.au
The BEAST is a monthly free mag given out across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs (Beaches Eastern Suburbs = Beast). It’s packed with great local info and I’ve been lucky enough to be a regular contributor with a Science of the Surf column since June 2009. You can read all the editions online and scroll through to find the SOS bits, but being lazy, I’ve also included most of the columns into the Beach Blog on this website.
